'AMCHI ITIHAS' - Old Konkani music and songs

The late Conception, the late Nelson and Anthony made up a trio who sang about politicians, politics, crime and social issues. When Nelson and Conception expired, Anthony continued with Joaquim and Souza boy, sometimes with Jr Nelson and Philip. At present, this trio, popularly known as Trio Kings, comprises of Joaquim, Jr Rod and Anthony.Some years back, Manfa Music, Margao, had released an audio cassette of the Trio Kings, titled ‘Amchi Itihas’.

In their endeavour to preserve old Konkani music and songs in the digital format on compact disc, Manfa have now released this album under the ‘Old Series’ collection. Most of the songs are rendered by Joaquim- Souza boy- Anthony.

The trio pays a rich tribute to the late Fr Savio Gama, hands a verbal thrashing to one ‘Inspector Rane’, criticises the communalism prevalent in ‘Oh India’ and remembers ‘Christopher’, the actor who died young.

‘Goem Sudorlem’ is about the regressive development of Goa, ‘Mother Thereza’ is in praise of the Albanian nun and and ‘Santosh Trophy’ recounts how Goa missed winning the nationals.

Loopholes in the law are described in ‘Andha Kanoon’, ‘Nylon 66’ mentions about pollution and to wind up there is ‘Alvernaz Aiemao’ and a humorous look at the fate of some crooked advocates, on ‘Advogad’.

The collection has music by the late Juju and Babush. The album is a must for fans of the Trio Kings and lovers of Konkani music.

Francis de Tuem has been a singer, musician and tiatrist who has been always centering his compositions around political events and happenings and moral awareness. He receives a rousing welcome with whistles and shouts of approval every time he takes the stage to perform, says a press release.

A trio involving him, Marcus Vaz and Xavier Gomes in "Amkam Shanti Di" reminds us of tiatrists of yesteryears. In the tiatr community he is a favourite among the fans as well as among the directors. Francis began his career from the village tiatr to Kala Academy tiatr competitions and then performed on the professional stage in tiatr written by Ximix trio titled "Kitem Hanvem Khelem".

From then on there was no looking back and he made strides in leaps and bounds. His first song on the audio CD was of C. D’Silva. He has also released two albums titled "Polkem Vodponn" and "Khursak Okman".

Francis de Tuem is a renowned Konkani tiatr artiste with an equal flair of being a top-notch singer as well a composer of panache. He has also made a name for himself as a director. His ‘Fest Korta Gaum Pirjentichem Naum’ has amply demonstrated the positive as well as the negative aspects especially of the newly arrived expatriates in the Middle East amongst the Goans.

Francis De Tuem is leaving for the Gulf to perform the tiatr written and directed by Mariano Fernandes, which recently bagged "the Dr Jack de Sequeira Memorial Puroskar" for the most entertaining drama of 2007 Amkam Shanti Di. He will be releasing his CD/audio cassette "Gulfamchem Varrem". In the month of April 2008, he will make a trip to the United Kingdom and perform at Wembley to entertain the Goans in Britain.

After staging two dramas in the past 8 years which had the audience amazed at the storyline, direction and concept which were enacted 110 times of his much acclaimed Konkani tiatr “Fr. Savio”, followed by 96 shows of “Mother Theresa”, F. Cardozo now present the true life story under F. Cardozo Production banner titled “Padr Agnel”.

PANJIM, OCT 12, 2007 - Legendary tiatr writer-director-actor Prem Kumar
expired in Mumbai Friday evening.


Prem Kumar who was is his 70s, suffered from diabetes and blood
pressure problems.


He was known for his creative sets and innovations on stage. Ordhi
Bakhri, a hit of yesteryears, was being re-released in Goa.


Born in Chandor, Peter D'Costa, who shot into prominence with his
stellar performances, went on to acquire the name of Prem Kumar. He
has around 50 dramas to his credit with hits like Upkar Naslolo,
Vauravadi, besides a Konkani movie Boglantt where he played the main
character.


He was recently honoured by Dalgado Academy for his contribution to
the Konkani stage.
Noted actor Anil Kumar said that his death is a huge loss to the
Konkani stage. "He has left a vacuum that will be hard to fill," he
disclosed.


President of Dalgado Konknni Akademy Tomazinho Cardozo while mourning
the death of Prem Kumar said, "In almost 55 years of active
association with the tiatr stage, he produced about 50 tiatrs that
created a lasting impression in the minds of the audience. He was an
actor and director par excellence."


Another prominent Konkani stage artist Prince Jacob said, "We have
lost a great pillar of the Konkani stage who did immense amount of
service. He set a benchmark by introducing the revolving stage...one of
his many innovations."


Tiatrist Wilmix Wilson Mazarello while highlighting Prem Kumar's
contribution said that the latter was one of the leading playwright/
directors who dedicated his entire life to the Konkani stage. "He is
also one of the few Konkani tiatrists who produced a 35 mm celluloid
Konkani film 'Boglantt' without Government assistance," Mazarello
said.

Panaji, Oct 12 The Dalgado Konknni Akademy today mourned the death of
veteran Konkani Tiatrist, Prem Kumar, who passed away today in Mumbai.


In a press release, the DKA chief, Mr Tomazinho Cardozo said, "In
almost 55 years of active association with the Tiatr stage, he
produced about 50 Tiatrs which have created a lasting impression on
the minds of the audience. His masterpieces include 'Vavraddi',
'Rinn', 'Dukh', 'Kakut', 'Jivit Ek Sopon', 'Konnank Mhunnonk Maim',
'Abdul Narayan D'Souza', 'Ordhi Bakhri', 'Jawan' and 'Peleache
Vostuchi Axea Korum Naie'.''


Born in Chandor as Peter D'Costa, Prem Kumar based his Tiatrs on
various themes relevant to the society at that time. He highlighted
various social issues, patriotism and importance of communal harmony
through his Tiatrs. Goa and the Goan identity always had a prominent
place in his plays.


Besides acting, stage movements, actors' expressions and reactions, he
concentrated equally on stage settings and light effects to beautify
the performance of the Tiatr.


Apart from Tiatr, he enacted several small roles in Hindi films like
'Mera Salam', 'Bandish', 'Shaukeen', 'Hum Bhi Insan Hai', 'Sakhi' and
'Bahadur'


Prem also acted in Konkani film 'Boglantt' as hero, which had Goan and
Mangalorean actors.


In May this year, the DKA honoured him by conferring on him 'Mons.
Dalgado Puroskar' for his lifetime contribution to Tiatr, said the
press note.

Audio albums from Pascoal Rodrigues, usually have meaningful songs with good lyrics and pleasant tunes. The latest one, titled ‘Khille’ and released by ‘Manfa Music’, Margao, does not disappoint.Osvi Viegas begins the programme with ‘Utrachi Mudi’, a tragic tale of a couple and the sanctity of the wedding ring. Lawry Travasso sings a beautiful tribute to the ailing M Boyer and Pascoal Rodrigues’ ‘Khille’ is a touching tale of a mother who has lost her little son. Felcy exhorts people to practice forgiveness on ‘Bhogsonnem’, Jaju Fernandes sings the impressive ‘Bible’ and Jane (nice voice) with Selvy sings ‘Pandu Lampianv’, an immensely humorous duet,

Angreat Rodrigues tells about the different saints on ‘Sant Bokht’ while Felcy is serenaded by Pascoal, as a fan who is deeply in love with the stage artiste he adores. Jaju returns once again to sing another beautiful number, ‘Udok’ and Pascoal winds up the album with ‘Dudacho Glass’ proving that goodness pays many times.

FC Global Music, Mumbai, have released a collection or old Konkani songs sung by some of the best singers from the Konkani stage and compiled by Felix Correia. These songs previously released on cassette make for pleasant listening.

‘Scientist’ the first track on the album is sung by the late Alfred Rose in his own inimitable style. Lorna sings ‘Kallzacho Kunvor’, the late C Alvares and Mohana render ‘Sun’ and the late Robin Vaz sings the hit ‘Backbaychem varem’. Rita Rose continues with ‘Londoncho Makod’, Englebert Rose with Alfred Rose sings ‘Tunch Maka Zai’ followed by Anthony San’s ‘Maink Chitt’ and Lawrence de Tiracol’s ‘Retire Zatoch’.
